What is WHMIS?

TSG
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s national hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are cautionary labelling of containers of WHMIS “controlled products”, the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and worker education and training programs.

WHMIS is based on 2 levels of laws

Level 1 - Federal laws that created WHMIS, including

  • The Hazardous Products Act, and
  • Controlled Products Regulations

These Federal laws require all of the provinces to create WHMIS laws that are based on the same details.

Level 2 - Provincial laws that implement WHMIS
For this reason, even though each province has their own workplace-related laws, their WHMIS training requirements are the same.

This course will allow employers to be in compliance with theWHMIS laws of their province, which require training for all employees who are exposed to or likely to be exposed to a controlled product.
